Cold-Weather Home Maintenance: Furnace, Pipes & Roof Checklist for BC Homes

In Kitimat, Terrace, and across BC, the difference between a calm winter and an expensive one comes down to a few hours of work in September. This is the checklist we'd hand every homeowner before the first cold snap.

Furnace & heating

• Book a professional furnace service before October. Local HVAC techs fill up fast in Northern BC.
• Replace the filter, then set a recurring task to swap it every 3 months.
• Test the thermostat (and replace batteries if applicable).
• Confirm CO and smoke detectors are working.
• If you use a wood stove or fireplace, get the chimney swept and inspected.

Plumbing & freeze prevention

• Drain and shut off all exterior taps; remove and store hoses.
• Insulate any exposed pipes (crawlspace, garage, exterior walls).
• Know where your main water shutoff is — and make sure every adult in the house knows too.
• If you'll be away during a cold snap, leave heat on at minimum 12°C and have someone check in.

Roof, gutters & snow load

• Clean gutters after the leaves drop — pine needles in Northern BC are relentless.
• Inspect for missing or lifted shingles.
• Trim branches that overhang the roof or power lines.
• Know your roof's snow load limit and have a plan to clear it safely after heavy storms.

Doors, windows & envelope

• Replace worn weatherstripping.
• Re-caulk gaps around exterior penetrations (vents, taps, cable lines).
• Check attic insulation depth — Northern BC homes often need more than they have.

Vehicles & driveway

• Swap to winter tires before the first snowfall (legally required on most BC highways from October).
• Top up washer fluid with winter-rated formula.
• Check the battery; cold cranks kill weak batteries fast.
• Stock the vehicle with a small winter kit: blanket, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight.
